1973-D Lincoln Memorial Cent Repunched Mintmarks

Designation Description Image
Damaged Mintmark Punch Strong doubling of the horizontal line on the upper mint mark as well as split upper and lower serifs are the result of a damaged mintmark punch. It is not a RPM. All examples of the damaged punch show the doubled horizontal line.

Comments: This is a replacement listing, the original die was found to have the damaged mintmark punch.

Die Markers:
Obverse: Short N/S die scratch centered between the upper area of the GO in GOD. Short N/S die scratch near the rim at the left upper side of the W in WE.
Reverse: Die crack at the rim at 7:30 o’clock to the lower center of the O in ONE then turning NW and running through the left side. Die gouge inside the N of ONE at the upper area of the lower opening. Die scratches NE from the E of CENT running to the NT of CENT.

Die Markers:
Obverse: Stage A: Numerous die scratches are present on the obverse. Strong die scratches through the date. Die scratches run northeast through RTY in LIBERTY. Stage B: Die scratches through RTY of LIBERTY still visible. Most other die scratches very faint.
Reverse: Stage A: First Reverse. Lincoln nearly abraded away inside the center bay. Polishing gouge at the left side of the memorial base. Stage B: Second reverse. Heavy abrasion left of roof.

Comments: I would like to see an example of this die in earlier die state to determine if the area of doubling to the lower east is a true RPM or a well placed die gouge or scratch. The examined coin was in later die state.

Reverse: Numerous mostly north to south die scratches throughout the reverse. Strong die scratch directly south from E in UNITED.
